Concussive Strikes and Brain Shakes

We are back with another installment of Intuitive Self Protection’s weekly blog and we’re ready to unravel the secrets behind a few head rockin’ self-defense techniques. But first things first, let's clarify; anyone who rolls with ISP doesn’t go around looking for fight. Our goal is to end fights quickly and effectively. When all attempts at de-escalation fail, when distraction isn't enough, and your attacker won’t back down; that's when our game-changing techniques come into play. We’re talking about concussive striking and brain-shaking moves that can turn the tables on a desperate situation.

The Classic Clinch on Steroids

You know that classic clinch that you may have seen in a number of martial arts? Well, we’re gonna take it up a whole other level. With both hands, you want go towards the attackers face/neck, striking them on the way in to that clinch. You will then clinch your hands together behind the attacker’s neck and concussively strike the low brain stem.  With that brain shake and clinch, your attacker will be stunned by the minor concussion you just gave em’ but you don’t want to stop there. Remember, we’re fight finishers, and this guy has threatened our safety. From there you have control of the attacker’s head and you can manipulate the body as you see fit. You can attack those high value targets right there in finger’s reach; eyes and ears. Digging a thumb into an eye or scratching an eyeball is excruciating. You can do the same with the ear or go in to cup to that ear which could rupture an eardrum and through off your attacker’s equilibrium, not to mention the pain of it all. Keep in mind, this isn’t sparring practice, sport or traditional martial arts. This is nasty stuff and these techniques are to be used to crush your attacker so you can make it home safely.

The Disruptive Impact of Concussive Strikes

Why is the concussive strike and brain shake so effective? Rapid head shaking disrupts cognitive processes, causing confusion and temporary memory loss. Sensory inputs are overwhelmed, leading to a loss of spatial orientation that you can use to your advantage, for sure. Intense head shaking can induce nausea and vomiting, further incapacitating the attacker. And on top of all of that is the psychological impact where the attacker will likely feel intense fear and panic, jacking up their ability to think clearly and react rationally. These effects give us a real strategic edge in self defense that allows us to neutralize threats effectively.
